Helping Students to
Help Cape
Each year, hundreds of people die of starvation
and malnutrition even in our own country, despite the tremendous amount of
food produced and available in our industry. The amount of food that we
waste is alarming, and is a contributing factor to the problem. At
Chartwells, it is our continuing goal to be an industry leader and play an
integral role in offering a solution to this problem.
We calculated how much food is wasted and
learned an alarming trend. On average each customer wastes over a quarter
pound of food and 2.5 ounces of soda, milk and juice each meal. If you
factor this out it relates to 342 pounds of food and 21 gallons of beverages
wasted at each day. That contributes to a ton of local landfill waste each
week and 131 gallons of beverage going down the drain.
We want to team up with you to help eliminate
waste while reducing hunger in our area. Our goal is to reduce that amount.
We have calculated that 10,250 pounds of food and 700 gallons will be wasted
for the rest of this semester.
We will randomly measure waste for an hour each
week for the rest of the semester. We will use this measurement to
approximate the amount of waste that occurred that week and publish the
results on Monday. The amount of waste that is reduced by the end of the
semester will determine how much Chartwells will have to donate.
