Southeast Students Allowed To Donate Meal Plan Dollars to Local Charities

Chartwells is once again offering Philanthropic Flex, a program that provides an opportunity for students to donate meal-plan-flex and meals-to-flex dollars to local charities. This semester, donated flex will be used to purchase non-perishable goods for the American Red Cross and the Bootheel Food Bank efforts to serve those in need and aid in disaster relief. This year students are challenged to exceed last spring’s donated flex total of $3,600 by 10 percent. Posters will be displayed in Café Court and Rowdy’s tracking the progress. Since the start of this program, more than 7,000 meals have provided to local charities.

During this year’s ice storms and recent flooding, the American Red Cross provided more than 4,600 meals to area residents. A large portion of those meals were made possible through the Philanthropic Flex program. Current Red Cross food reserves are exhausted and they need your help restocking.  “The food received from Chartwells, and other community partners, makes the work of the Red Cross possible, “said Cheryl Klueppel, Executive Director Southeast Missouri Chapter American Red Cross. “Donations of time, blood, money, and resources allow the Red Cross to continue their mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.”

Philanthropic Flex lets students voluntarily allow their meal-plan-flex and meals-to-flex dollars to purchase food products in support of local meal programs. Students can participate by telling the cashier how many flex dollars they would like to donate. If students are curious about how much flex dollars they have available, they can view their meal plan balance online via the student portal.

Helping Students to Help Cape

Each year, hundreds of people die of starvation and malnutrition even in our own country, despite the tremendous amount of food produced and available in our industry. The amount of food that we waste is alarming, and is a contributing factor to the problem. At Chartwells, it is our continuing goal to be an industry leader and play an integral role in offering a solution to this problem.

We calculated how much food is wasted and learned an alarming trend. On average each customer wastes over a quarter pound of food and 2.5 ounces of soda, milk and juice each meal. If you factor this out it relates to 342 pounds of food and 21 gallons of beverages wasted at each day.  That contributes to a ton of local landfill waste each week and 131 gallons of beverage going down the drain.

We want to team up with you to help eliminate waste while reducing hunger in our area. Our goal is to reduce that amount. We have calculated that 10,250 pounds of food and 700 gallons will be wasted for the rest of this semester.

We will randomly measure waste for an hour each week for the rest of the semester. We will use this measurement to approximate the amount of waste that occurred that week and publish the results on Monday. The amount of waste that is reduced by the end of the semester will determine how much Chartwells will have to donate.

Participation is easy. The less you waste, the more we give. How to help...Its simple. Just use smaller portions and try to drink all of what you take.  Towers Café is an all-you-care-to-eat facility so you can make as many trips as you want. Just make sure when you finish you have a clean plate.
